Each summer, hospitals treat thousands of people who have been injured by lawn mowers. It’s a good idea to read over these tips and brush up on lawn mower safety, especially if you plan to teach one of your kids to use a mower.
1) Know how to operate the equipment. Read the owner’s manual and learn where all the controls are and what they do.
2) Never disable guards or other safety devices.
3) Dress properly. Wear heavy shoes, long pants, and close fitting clothes.
4) Handle gas carefully. Store it in an approved container away from the house, flames or sparks, and children and pets. Don’t smoke or fill the tank while the engine is hot or running.
5) Inspect the yard before you mow. Remove rocks, sticks, toys, and trash. Keep children and pets away.
6) Keep your hands and feet away from the moving parts of the mower. Turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before attempting to unclog the mower or perform any maintenance. Turn the mower off if you need to leave it unattended, even for a minute.
